Sorry, I Had to Let You Go

A poem about the ultimate heartache

{TRIGGER WARNING ~ loss, grief, estrangement, mental illness}

.

You needed me, I needed you

We were promised to one another

Our love eternal, sweet, and pure

You were my dear kind Mother.

.

To watch you slip away like that

Through a hole too deep to fathom

To lose you more and more each day

Meant that I too fell in the chasm.

.

My pure intent to pull you out

To hold a light to show you how

Only gathered darker storms

Deep enough for us to drown.

.

You fell away, too tired to fight

The ever-gaining tempest

And I came with you part of the way

My failing health unnoticed.

.

’Twas almost too late by the time I knew

That nighttime had arrived

Despair had taken me into her arms
